What to Expect at Your Pet’s First Wellness Exam

September 21, 2026 by Dr. Caraballo

Bringing a new pet home is an exciting experience, and scheduling their first wellness exam is one of the most important steps you can take to protect their health. Whether you have welcomed a new puppy or kitten, adopted an adult pet, or are simply establishing care with a new veterinary practice, that first appointment gives us an opportunity to get to know your pet and establish a foundation for their future care.

At Happy Tails Veterinary Care, Dr. Caraballo believes that preventive medicine begins with understanding each pet as an individual. Every pet has different needs based on age, breed, lifestyle, medical history, environment, and risk factors. Our goal is to provide thorough, compassionate veterinary care while helping pet owners understand the recommendations being made for their companions.

Why the First Wellness Exam Is Important

A wellness exam is much more than a quick checkup. It gives Dr. Caraballo an opportunity to evaluate your pet’s overall health, establish important baseline information, identify potential concerns early, and develop an individualized preventive care plan.

Pets cannot tell us when something feels different, and some medical conditions may develop without obvious symptoms at home. Routine examinations can help identify subtle changes before they become more serious.

For puppies and kittens, early wellness visits are particularly important because their bodies and immune systems are developing rapidly. These appointments allow us to monitor growth, discuss nutrition and behavior, establish an appropriate vaccination schedule, and begin parasite prevention.

For adult and senior pets, establishing baseline health information also makes it easier to recognize meaningful changes as they age.

What Happens During the Wellness Exam?

A comprehensive physical examination is at the center of your pet’s first visit.

Dr. Caraballo will evaluate your pet from nose to tail and may assess the:

  • Eyes, ears, nose, and mouth
  • Teeth and gums
  • Skin and coat
  • Lymph nodes
  • Heart and lungs
  • Abdomen
  • Muscles and joints
  • Body condition and weight
  • Overall behavior and appearance

Your pet’s weight and body condition will also be documented. Maintaining a healthy weight is an important part of preventive medicine, and having an accurate baseline allows us to monitor changes during future visits.

The examination also gives you an opportunity to discuss anything you have noticed at home, including changes in appetite, drinking, urination, bowel movements, activity, behavior, mobility, skin, ears, or weight.

Vaccinations Tailored to Your Pet

Vaccination recommendations should not necessarily be identical for every pet.

Dr. Caraballo will review your pet’s age, previous vaccination history, lifestyle, environment, and potential exposure risks before recommending an appropriate vaccination plan.

Puppies and kittens generally require a series of vaccines as their immune systems mature, while adult pets need vaccines and boosters based on their individual needs and current veterinary guidelines.

Having your pet’s vaccination and medical records available before the appointment allows Dr. Caraballo and our team to review what has already been administered, determine what may be due, and avoid unnecessary duplication whenever possible.

Parasite Screening and Prevention

Living in South Florida means pets can be exposed to parasites throughout the year. Fleas, ticks, heartworms, and intestinal parasites can affect even pets that spend most of their time indoors.

During your pet’s wellness visit, we can discuss an appropriate year-round parasite prevention program based on your pet’s individual needs.

Screening recommendations may include a fecal examination for intestinal parasites and heartworm testing when appropriate. Dr. Caraballo can then recommend preventive options to help protect your pet against common parasites.

Prevention is generally much easier than treating the diseases and complications these parasites can cause.

The Importance of Diagnostic Screening

A pet can appear perfectly healthy while changes are occurring internally. For this reason, laboratory screening may be recommended as part of preventive care.

Depending on your pet’s age, medical history, and individual risk factors, Dr. Caraballo may recommend bloodwork, urinalysis, fecal testing, heartworm testing, or other diagnostic screening.

Baseline laboratory testing can provide valuable information about your pet’s health and gives us results that can be compared with future testing. As pets become older, these trends can become especially useful for identifying changes earlier.

At Happy Tails Veterinary Care, we believe diagnostic testing should have a purpose. Dr. Caraballo will discuss recommended tests with you and explain why they may be beneficial for your pet.

Nutrition, Weight, and Lifestyle

Your pet’s wellness visit is also an excellent opportunity to discuss nutrition.

The appropriate diet and feeding amount can vary considerably depending on your pet’s age, breed, activity level, body condition, and medical needs. Maintaining an appropriate body weight can play an important role in long-term health and mobility.

Please bring the name and type of food your pet is currently eating, including the brand and specific formula whenever possible. If you are unsure of the exact name, taking a picture of the food bag, can, or label before your appointment can be helpful.

Please also let us know about treats, supplements, table foods, medications, or other nutritional products your pet receives.

For puppies and kittens, we can also discuss feeding schedules, growth, house training, socialization, dental care, and other questions that commonly arise during the first months at home.

Please Provide Medical Records When Booking Your Appointment

If your pet has previously received veterinary care, please provide all available medical records and vaccination information at the time you schedule your appointment.

If you do not have copies of the records, please provide us with the name and contact information of your pet’s previous veterinary hospital or clinic when booking. This allows our team to request the records in advance and have the information available for Dr. Caraballo to review before your visit.

Receiving your pet’s medical and vaccination history ahead of time helps us prepare appropriately for the appointment, determine what services may be due, and reduce the time spent trying to obtain information while you and your pet are already at the hospital.

Our goal is to make your visit efficient, organized, pleasant, and as stress-free as possible. Having records available beforehand also helps prevent unnecessary delays that could affect your appointment or the appointments scheduled after yours.

What Should You Bring to Your Pet’s First Appointment?

A little preparation at home can help us make your pet’s first visit more comfortable and efficient.4

Please bring:

  • A fresh stool sample. Whenever possible, collect a fresh sample at home and bring it with you in a clean, sealed container or bag. Having a sample available may help us avoid having to collect one from your pet at the hospital, which some pets may find uncomfortable or stressful. Our goal is to keep your pet’s examination as gentle, pleasant, and low-stress as possible.
  • The name of your pet’s food. Please bring the brand and specific formula of the food your pet is currently eating. A photo of the bag, can, or label is perfectly acceptable and can make this information easier to provide.
  • A list of current medications and supplements, including any flea, tick, and heartworm preventives.
  • Information about any recent changes in appetite, drinking, urination, bowel movements, activity, weight, mobility, or behavior.
  • Any questions or concerns you would like to discuss with Dr. Caraballo.

Because medical and vaccination records should be provided when the appointment is scheduled, you generally should not need to gather those documents on the day of your visit.

Small details can provide important information about your pet’s health, so please mention anything you have noticed at home, even if it seems minor.
